Bathtub Refinishing Process: Step by Step

Are you unsure how to plan for your refinishing job? Here is what to expect during the bathtub refinishing process.

Step 1) Masking. The surrounding walls and surfaces close to the bathtub need to be protected during the refinishing process. To do this we cover them with a combination of masking paper and plastic sheets. To speed up this process we ask that you clear personal items and decorations out of the bathroom before we arrive. *If you are concerned about protecting items or clothing in adjacent rooms or closets, then we recommend covering those areas with spare sheet's or with plastic sheeting on your own before we arrive.

Step 2) Surface Repairs. Filling in chips, repairing cracks and removal of prior coatings.

Step 3) High Intensity Cleaning. Dual purpose of removing surface contaminants and etching/buffing the item to be coated.

Step 4) Drying and repairing any masking that was damaged or loosened.

Step 5) First coating is the primer. 2-4 layers.

Step 6) Final coating is the top coat. 2-4 layers.

Step 7) Curing. Typically 24-48 hours. (Do Not Touch or get wet)

Step 8) Re-caulking. *If not already done during the initial coating. (The customer has the option of doing the re-caulking themselves or paying for the technician to come back a second time to re-caulk)

Step 9) Final Cleaning. *The technician will do an initial clean up before he leaves. But some masking tape and paper may have to stay in place until the coating has cured. These materials can be taken off once the surface is fully dry and thrown away. (The customer has the option of doing the final cleaning themselves or paying for the technician to come back a second time to do it.)

It should be noted that defects may occur in the surface resulting from the bathtub refinishing process. These defects may not appear until hours after the technician has left. In the event of a surface defect, please inform the office at your earliest convenience and we will schedule a time for the technician to come back and perform surface repairs. In this case, re-caulking and final cleaning will likely be handled by the technician on the same visit.
